Windstar Intake vs Intake Spacer
Here is a comparison and my posted gains for the two
products.
99-04 Intake Spacer Kit 7ft/tq
5hp
99-04 Windstar Intake Kit 15ft/tq 7hp
Ok, so now I am going to try and explain why a direct comparison like this
is incorrect. Stay with me here.
Here is an excerpt from the intake spacer dyno thread on
3.8mustang.com:
"The dynos consistently showed up to an extra 6-7rwtq and up
to 8rwhp. The gains were primarily in the lower rpm's though.
Overall, peak performance (the highest number on the dyno) only went
up by about 2rwtq and 3rwhp. Remember though, peak power typically
occurs high in the rpm's. As was just stated, this mod is best for
low-end power."
When Ford or any other car manufacture
rate their engines they post the "peak" power numbers. The
Windstar is rated at 200HP, 240TQ. The 99-00 Mustang makes 190HP,
220TQ and the 01-04 Mustang makes 193HP and 225TQ. The Windstar and
Mustang both have an identical engine setup except for the Intake
manifold. This gives the Windstar intake a 10HP, 20TQ lead on a 99-00 and a
7HP, 15TQ lead on the 01-04 Mustangs. But now remember this is
"peak" power output which occurs at high RPM's. As you
read above,
the spacers provided even more power down low, (longer
runners give power to lower RPMs) but the "peak" gain was
lower, at 2TQ,
3HP. Thus, it should be reasonable to conclude that the Windstar
intake will provide a steady ~15TQ gain
throughout the most of the RPM band, where as the spacer would give
a 7TQ
gain located more in the lower RPM's.
Our splitport engines have two runners per cylinder; short runners
for high RPM, long runners for low RPM. The
more efficient Windstar has longer "long" runners and shorter
"short" runners. Where as a spacer can only lengthen the runners,
which gives you more low end power, the Windstar intake can give you
the best of both worlds.
You can visually see what I am saying by looking at this dyno graph
that was recently done by Johnny.
Windstar Dyno Results. Note the increased gain in the mid RPM
range.
